Module 1 of 6

A system built to harmonize, not restrict.

David Kibbe is a New York stylist who built this system in the 1980s, when fashion was fixed on a single silhouette — tall, narrow, angular — and everyone else was told to "correct" toward it. His move was the opposite: clothes should accommodate the line you already have, not fight it. Kibbe sorts every body into one of five families by the line it draws, and finding your rough place on that map gives the rest of the system — thirteen types, yin and yang, the styling dials — somewhere to land.Kibbe is as much an aesthetic as a body read. Two people with near-identical measurements can land in different image identities because one reads sharp and commanding while the other reads soft and warm — the energy you give off is part of the read.

Thirteen line-drawn female figures sketched on notebook paper — the full set of Kibbe image identities across the five families.

The 13 image identities

An theme is the whole aesthetic read — not just your body's lines, but the energy you project — translated into one of 13 style archetypes. It's what your / balance becomes once it has a name and a styling logic to follow.

Each splits into variations — sharper, softer, taller, more petite — for 13 themes in total. Tap through each panel below to see the , height, , body type, facial features, and style references for every type.

Dramatic family · Pure yang
Essence
Regal · Commanding · Aloof · Sculptural · Cool · Statuesque
Height
Moderate to tall — typically 5'5" and over. Stature reads imposing even at the shorter end of the range.
Bone structure
Sharp-edged bones with knife-clean joints. Square-set shoulders that can sit on the narrower side. Hands and feet are long and slender. The face carries pronounced bones — nose, jawline, cheekbones. Even with the narrowness, nothing reads fragile: the long frame keeps the whole picture polished rather than delicate.
Body type
Slim and column-like. Long, taut muscle that draws a clean vertical. Limbs run long; the line stays narrow from shoulder to ankle.
Facial features
Crisp, linear architecture across the face. Almond or narrow eyes with a slight elongation. Thin, narrow, or flat-cut lips. Skin sits taut over the cheek and jaw.
Hair
Reads extreme either way — fine and silky (poker-straight, or with a slight bend), or thick and wild (coarse curls or waves). The signal is intensity, not direction.
What they often don't have
  • Hourglass-shaped
  • Lush or full in the face (round eyes, plush cheeks, full lips)
  • Broad or blunt anywhere in the bones or features
  • Petite, or short overall
  • Perfectly symmetrical
  • Short-limbed or fleshy through the arms and legs

Body type
Straight-cut and big-boned (broad rather than sharp). Arms and legs lean muscular. Bust and hips read flat or straight unless weight comes on.
Facial features
Wide, blunt, open. Eyes either big and open or smaller and straight-set. Lips run straight and a bit thin. Cheeks sit taut unless weight comes on.
Hair
Extreme textures — either very straight and fine, or very thick and coarsely wavy/curly.

The core idea: integrating your inner and outer selves

Kibbe's whole goal is integrating the inner and outer self — making sure what people see when they look at you actually matches the person you already are, instead of forcing you toward someone else's beauty ideal. When your clothes, hair, makeup, and color all work together to project the specific qualities you came in with, you stop manufacturing a "look" and start radiating the one that's already yours. That's the whole point of the system.

Frequently asked

How do I know what Kibbe type I am?

Your Kibbe type comes from your overall yin/yang balance — bone structure, flesh, and facial features read together, not your size. StyleMeMama has a free quiz when you sign up to learn your Kibbe image identity.

Is Kibbe the same as body shape?

No. Body shape looks at where your weight sits (hips vs shoulders); Kibbe reads your whole physical essence — bone, flesh, and face — into one of 13 image identities, which is why it guides style more completely.
