Contrast is the value gap between your hair, your skin, and your eyes — how separated they read in a black-and-white photo. Some faces sit in one even wash of close grays; others span the whole range, with bright skin against deep hair and eyes. Your contrast level tells you how much value range an outfit can carry before it starts pulling focus from your face.

Low, medium, high — and where you land

The easiest way to find your contrast level is the same grayscale photo we use for the drape test. Strip the color out of a bare-face daylight shot and look at how separated your hair, skin, and eyes are. Close together → low. Visibly stepped → medium. Cut-and-paste sharp → high. Your season hints at where you'll land, but contrast is really its own reading.

The shortcut: the value gap between your top and your bottom should roughly mirror the gap between your hair and your skin. If your features are a half-step apart, your outfit should be too. If they jump a full octave, the outfit can jump too.

Stay close in value across the outfit. Tonal dressing — pieces a few steps apart, not opposite ends of the page — is the move.
